Kahrl

Andrew W. Kahrl studies the history of race, real estate, land use, and taxation in the twentieth-century United States. He is the author of The Land Was Ours: African American Beaches from Jim Crow to the Sunbelt South (Harvard UP, 2012) and Free the Beaches: The Story of Ned Coll and the Battle for America's Most Exclusive Shoreline (Yale UP, 2018), and has written extensively on the social and environmental impact of real estate development and privatization on beaches and coastal areas. He is currently writing a book on discriminatory and inequitable taxation against African American property owners from Reconstruction to the present. Kahrl is also the co-Principal Investigator for a National Park Service study of African American outdoor recreation, and is the co-director of The Repair Lab: Racial Justice and Environmental Policy Initiative.
